Cycling at Night - My Awesome New Light

As the seasons moved across to take a more gloomy tone, I became increasingly anxious about the effects this would have on the time with my precious Tifosi, of which I felt I had only recently been reunited.

I quickly felt the days closing in on me, and saw my rides getting more and more compromised in the aim of keeping them well lit. Before I knew it - it was dark when leaving the office and my evening rides comprised of cycling to the M5 and back along the A-road out of Bristol. It was all I could do with a substandard 'to be seen' light.

The concept of loosing my weekday slots altogether and residing myself to a turbo trainer seemed catastrophic - not least for my new found Strava addiction. But alas, I found an excellent review and comparison of lights on The Road CC site, which helped me find the incredible feat of light technology that is the Electron Terra 3 Li-Lon Front Light.

The Big Road CC Light Test

Road CC pooled in all their lights and used a tunnel to rig up a test. Photographing each light and its performance - they then hosted the results on a side by side bike light comparison interface and paired it with a few reviews.

Strangely they didn't review the light I opted for, but it was the brightest 'Pro' light within a not too ludicrous price range within their comparison. It is by no means cheep, but judging from the images I saw, when compared to others within the price arena it seemed excellent value for money, and it is.

My Electron Terra 3 and How it Fared on The Road

I was quite shocked when it arrived in the post, not least because of it's size (I don't know what I was naively expecting considering the output I saw in the picture online), but more than anything the weight.

The reviews said light weight, and this I would not consider light weight if I'm honest, but after looking around in more detail I have seen it is pretty comparable with others of it's level.

It came in a neat and luxurious box with foam inner casing which shows it's price tag, and was not over packaged which I liked (unlike most things I have brought online lately).

Right lets go then... oh wait where do I put the batteries? Oh right that's it, it's rechargeable.

The battery unit was something I had not thought about. A rechargeable internal battery is not ideal for convenience and means that you have to have a degree of preparation for each ride. This light does however come with a handy feature with includes a colour changing light warning you when you reach the 25% remaining, which would easily see me home most nights (3 hours on the dim setting).

The light comes with three settings bright, medium and dim. Dim I have found to be easily enough light for any road (without blinding oncoming traffic), and this setting will give you a good 12 hours.

The fitting is secure when fitted properly - though a bit of a squeeze onto my bars (on both my Tifosi and Dawes), and the first time I used it I had not secured it tightly enough, leaving it coming loose and dropping down (shining into my eyes, giving me a near heart attack) on the bumpy road.

I make sure I get every last turn out of the screw fixture now when I fit it (you have to take the fitting off to remove the light when you recharge, annoyingly...) and I have had no problems since.

Comparing to other bike lights

I have only had a B-spoke front light in the past, which is fine for being seen, but useless when on dark country roads, and so admittedly  I don't have much frame for comparison...

I also have not tested it against the highly recommended Hope Vision 1 LED, but can tell you that if I had to spend the money again on this light... (given that all those in my club chose the day after I made the Electron Terra purchase to engage on a group thread singing the joys of  the Hope Vision) I would do the same again.

My Electron Terra 3 review (SUMMARY) ...

This light looks beautiful, feels robust and when fitted correctly is secure on my bike.

I have less worries about it now (battery wise) than I did with other bike lights, seeing as I don't have to keep track of when it was charged, given the battery warning covers a long enough period to be an entire evening ride.

The capability of this light too is unbelievable, the light it gives out is not only bright enough to be seen safely, and see effectively but it also covers the whole road, so is perfect for avoiding potholes, darting rabbits and fallen branches along roads without even street lights or traffic headlights.

Weather permitting you'd not need a turbo ever again. Weather permitting of course being the key phrase.
